Moving Tips

Looking for some easy moving tips to get you started during your move? All in the Family Moving and Storage has some for you! Whether you’re taking care of the move yourself or hiring us to help you move to your new home, this helpful relocation advice will definitely aid you along the way.

Double check everything

Before locking up and heading to your new home, be sure to double and triple check every room, closet, drawer, nook and cranny to make sure that nothing was left behind. You don’t want to make it all the way to your new home and realize that you forgot your cat!

Gather multiple quotes

You might think that choosing the mover with the lowest quote is going to be your best bet, but sometimes you get what you pay for. It’s important that you gather quotes from multiple moving companies to ensure you find the right fit for your budget and moving needs.

Pack an overnight bag

The last thing you’ll want to do on moving day is wade through a sea of boxes to find your favorite slippers. Pack an overnight bag with all the essential items you’ll need for a sound night’s sleep after moving day - and don’t forget about setting aside clothes for the next day.

Keep the important stuff close by

Items like your passport, birth certificate and other important documentation or valuable items like jewelry should be kept with you at all times. You’ll probably need to have your contract and photo IDs ready throughout the day, so it’s best to keep them on your person.

Hire a babysitter

If you have children or pets, the last thing you want to worry about is their safety on moving day. Even though you told them to stay out of the moving company’s path, they always seem to find a way underfoot! Hiring a babysitter or scheduling a play date with friends away from home is going to be your best bet to keep kids and pets safe and out of the way.

Use proper packing materials

You shouldn’t use any old boxes to move your personal belongings. The packing materials you use should be in good condition without any major holes, rips and tears. You need these boxes and packing materials to protect your stuff! Choose it with care or hire us to do it all for you!

Create an accurate inventory

Making an inventory list will save you time in the long run and help you stay organized for your move. If there is any damage, you’ll be able to file an insurance claim a lot easier with an accurate inventory list of all your items

Pack early

Don’t leave packing to the last minute. You might be a champion procrastinator, but when it comes to moving, packing is definitely something that needs to be done ahead of time. If you don’t want to pack your stuff yourself, hire All in the Family Moving and Storage to do it for you!

Label your boxes

Labeling your boxes is just going to make the move easier when it comes time to unpack. It’s to open a box you thought contained your bedroom stuff, but in fact has your kitchen appliances inside. Do yourself a favor and clearly label the contents of your boxes and what room they should be moved to in your new home.

Don’t forget to get rid of stuff before the move

Moving can get expensive, which is why we always recommend that you pare down your stuff before you start packing and moving. Why pay to move things that you don’t even need anymore?

Know what the movers can and cannot move

There are certain items that moving companies can and cannot move and it’s best that you’re aware of what they are ahead of time. Movers are often not allowed to move hazardous materials like gasoline, paints and cleaning solvents. Check with the moving company to find out!

Don’t forget about your taxes

If you’re moving for work, don’t forget to see if you can deduct the moving expenses on your taxes. Usually, if you’re moving more than 50 miles away from your current home, are working full time and you incurred the expenses within a year of when you report to work – they’re tax deductible. Just be sure to check with your tax professional first if you have any questions and keep your receipts.
